A Beloved Tradition in Forsyth County

Sawnee Ballet Theatre is proud to celebrate its 34th annual production of The Nutcracker—a treasured holiday tradition in Forsyth County. This season also marks our 4th year as a featured part of The FoCAL Center’s performance lineup, bringing the magic of the holidays to the stage with new costumes, exquisite choreography, and unforgettable memories for the entire family.

The Story of The Nutcracker

It is Christmas Eve at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Silberhaus, who are hosting a joyful holiday party for their children, Clara and Fritz. As the guests arrive and the festivities begin, Clara’s mysterious and kind-hearted godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, presents her with a most unusual gift—a Nutcracker shaped like a toy soldier. Fritz, overcome with jealousy, breaks the toy, but Drosselmeyer repairs it with care.

Later that night, Clara sneaks downstairs to check on her beloved Nutcracker and falls asleep under the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. What follows is a fantastical dream that takes her far beyond her home.

Clara is swept into a magical battle between an army of toy soldiers and a fearsome Rat King and his mice. Just as the Nutcracker seems defeated, Clara bravely steps in, distracting the Rat King and saving her toy soldier—who is instantly transformed into a handsome Prince.

Together, Clara and the Prince journey through the sparkling Kingdom of Snow, where they are welcomed by the Snow Queen and her swirling Snowflakes. Their adventure continues as they arrive in the breathtaking Land of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy greets them with warmth and wonder.

In honor of Clara’s courage, dancers from around the world perform for her in a dazzling celebration. From Spanish chocolate to Arabian coffee, Chinese tea to Russian candy canes, and the delicate Waltz of the Flowers—each dance is more magical than the last.

To conclude the evening, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier present the elegant Grand Pas de Deux. As Clara bids farewell to this dreamlike world, she awakens at home, forever changed by her extraordinary journey.
