As we continue to grow, we remain dedicated to meeting the needs of our diverse North Georgia community and upholding our reputation as a premier arts organization.

Our History

Founded in 1991 by Artistic Director Joan Kall Stewart, Sawnee Ballet Theatre is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit pre-professional ballet company based in Cumming, Georgia. Under Ms. Stewart’s creative leadership, SBT quickly earned a reputation for delivering high-quality performances and exceptional dance training in Forsyth County.

Following her retirement in 2016, Courtney Bromwich was appointed Artistic Director. Ms. Bromwich has continued the company’s legacy while expanding its repertoire to include classical ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary works.

Sawnee Ballet Theatre operates out of the studios of Sawnee School of the Arts, formerly known as Sawnee School of Ballet, and proudly produces three major performances each year, including the community favorite: The Nutcracker.

Over the years, SBT has provided countless young dancers with transformative opportunities — many of whom have gone on to train at prestigious programs such as:

  • The Rock School for Dance Education

  • North Carolina School of the Arts

  • Boston Ballet

  • Bolshoi Ballet

  • School of American Ballet

  • American Ballet Theatre

  • Orlando Ballet

Alumni have earned scholarships to collegiate dance programs at institutions like:

  • Belhaven University

  • Joffrey School of Ballet

  • Kennesaw State University

  • Point Park University

  • Brenau University

Several have gone on to dance professionally with companies including Carolina Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre.

Sawnee Ballet Theatre remains dedicated to celebrating life through dance — and inspiring the next generation of artists — for years to come.
